No. It’s an excellent idea.

Possibly not as dumb as a MK4 1.8t?

I’m not 100% convinced but this damn thing is tempting.

From what I’ve read on [German] forums the 1.8t ain’t all that bad...
According to the same forums the V5 is also apparently okay with good care and regular maintenence. But it can also be an expensive nightmare if abused.

But why not VR6

More money, more insurance, more fuel.

What Ce He Sin said and the simple fact that finding an unmolested and affordable VR6 Golf/Jetta is rather hard.

Teh ‘murricans will probably tell you that MKIVs tend to self destruct and are in general a terrible idea, reliability wise. I don’t know if theirs were made in Mexico or something, but over here these actually fare pretty well. Despite the occasinal trouble with the window actuators not much going wrong with them. Friend of mine still has one with over 300k kms.

Looks like they forgot to take the drugs out of the boot, haha. But it does come with the original cassette player, so that’s cool-ish.
Is there any car you haven’t considered buying yet? ;-P

The MKIV does have its weak points like the window actuators and the soft plastic inner door handles but from all the people I know who have owned or own a MKIV I know they’re very solid and reliable but still modern. I’m a bit worried about the V5 engine and possible Wartungsstau.

The blue plastic bags really look suspicious...
I would actually prefer the OEM cassette player over an ordinary ugly aftermarket unit because an aux adapter is available for that.
Not having a car really sucks even though public transit is very good in my town. I’m still thinking hard about buying a car but I’m hesitant...

It’s a bit of an odd choice to leave the winter tyres in the boot, but well, maybe they ran out of space to put them.
That’s why I had a car 2 months before getting my full license, I couldn’t bare not having a car while I could have one.
I understand that you are hesitant, I was too about my first car, however you’ve still got 4-ish months to find one before the europpo meet, so just make sure you make the ‘right’ decision, whatever that may be...

I just looked at the ad. That thing is mint. Nice!

It does look really clean and great for its age but like I said, I have doubts about the regular maintenence though. From what I can tell from the blurry pic of the service booklet the last service was done in 07 (!).

OK-ish?

Or that just isn’t the last page? I really like ads where they include pics of the whole booklet.
I had found the perfect E61 for me (dead set on the newer iDrive with the USB port and the internal 12 GB hard drive for mp3s, which only leaves 1,5 production years before the shift to the F11, also sunroof, leather etc... which limits choices a lot). It had been serviced every two years with an average of 15k kms driven per year, except the last service was in 07/15 and it was only driven 3k kms since then. Hmmmm odd. Anyway, it was in Nürnberg so no chance to get to it before christmas, and it is sold now.

Hmmmm...... I might really have to take a look at it...

I really hope that’s the case.
That really sucks and I’ve had similar situations before where that one perfect car is either too far away or is just simply for sale at the wrong time.

Can’t hurt. Have you had the chance to check out warm hatches like the Swift Sport and the Twingo RS?
![]() 11/21/2016 at 14:41 |

Not really to be honest, not that many pop up for sale in my price range in my area plus I’ve been busy. That Twingo RS is still for sale but I haven’t taken a look at it.

Hey now, I love my 1.8t. I abuse her every day and she keeps on ticking.
